my latest
Ok so it's been over a month since I last updated. I'm going to give a quick summary from the middle of December, since I last posted. If you want more detail, you know my email address!
Well the month of December, at work, was flat out. I had a huge task list to complete before I finished at my job at South Waikato District Council. I was surprised how much work I did those last 3 weeks, let alone what my boss thought! All I got from them was snootiness - obviously they weren't overly keen that I was leaving, but I thought they would've got over the fact and be happy that I was furthering myself!
On a personal note, I don't really remember what I did in December, but I know I was busy all the weekends. I headed to Tauranga for Christmas. We had it with the Morten family in Anthenree. We've been having Christmas together for a few years now as both our families are all in the South Island. These kids I used to babysit, and a little while ago, I was partying with both of them!!!!
New Years Eve was spent in Tauranga with some old school friends. Some I hadn't seen in years! I didn't have any plans, but Jo Bacchus came to my rescue! We went into town to The Cornerstone Pub to listen to Magic Eye. They're an awesome band! They're from Huntly, or somewhere nearby. They picked great songs to cover, and really got the party going.
The week immediately after New Years was spent helping Mum doing food shopping for camp. What a mission! Feeding 120 people for a week. We had to do several trips as it didn't all fit in the car at once. The Saturday morning of camp (6th Jan) we were at Woolworths at 7am as the doors opened to do all the chilled and frozen food shopping - it filled both our cars entirely!!!!!!!
At Camp Quality this year I was on staff, for something different. They were very short on staff this year, so I was one of 2 photographers. The perks to being staff means MUCH better rooms. The 2 photographers and videographer had our own tourist flat with 2 bedrooms, a kitchenette and small lounge. We had a fridge, which found itself filled with lovely drinks so we always had a supply of COLD drinks. I really enjoyed being photographer this year. As I took the photography course at the end of the last year, it was good to put the learnings into practice. The only thing I didn't like was that it felt like I was watching the whole camp through a viewfinder, rather than actually being involved. This feeling didn't really bother me until we had the ball on the Thursday night.
WOW, the ball. That was a fantastic event! The programme committee did a great job on this. We hired a room at Rydges hotel in Rotorua and they did an amazing job decorating the room as a ballroom! They had balloons (yes Jo did manage to get through the night) and glitter over the tables and a stage for the concert. We had an MC (Mike -ex radio DJ - from Rotorua who was on Escarpade with us in November) and then a DJ to provide the music for the ball. They put on a lovely banquet dinner (which was aimed at kids though - no vegies!). It was a great night. We even got to set up a proper photo booth to do "proper ball photos", thanks to Ron who provided us with studio lights!
Now it brings me to the current week. Yesterday I started my new job at Hamilton City Council. The day was as unproductive as you can imagine a first day would be! I started at 9am, did the floor walk around to meet the team, had morning tea, did some reading in the knowledge base, then our immediate team went out for lunch together! How great is that! The afternoon was spent filling in HR forms and doing more reading. Really struggled to stay awake actually! I'm definately a hands-on learner, NOT reading about it.
Today was good though. I fixed a couple of jobs and did some first responses to some other calls. The thing I've found out about this job is that it really doesn't have much to do with the customer, like they made it sound in the interview. I thought it was customer support, but what happens is that the users log a call with the helpdesk if there is a problem with some software, and if it's a software fault, then we take it on, but if it's a user error, we really have nothing to do with it. Not sure what all the talk of my customer service skills had to do with anything, then!
Anyway, this is a great team to work with. A very social group, unlike previous IT teams I've worked with. They have social drinks on the last Friday of each month, where they stop work at 4pm for nibbles and drinks. Bring it on!!!
So now that you're sick of reading about ME, I'll sign off. I'm on my new laptop without any photos, etc, so you'll just have to wait for them. Hopefully coming soon!
